Electric Vehicles in Griffith Park
give people a chance to live oil-free!

June 5, 2003

Why should GM be taking these cars off the road?

  1. These cars are fun to drive (a surprising number of pilots like the EV1, perhaps because it reminds one of the effortless power of takeoff)
  2. Electric cars challenge the oil companies
  3. Also challenge the logistic-support model for profitable aftersales, since they don't break down and require massive spare and replacement part sales
  4. GM was never serious about the program, they never had it set up for mass production, they would have been baffled if more than 500 people ordered them -- just as Toyota cancelled the program when their hand-build quota was sold. It wasn't the lack of demand, it was there was too much demand to suit the oilies.
  5. Electric car drivers challenge global warming and dependence on foreign oil
  6. EV1 are now being scrapped in a salvage yard, should be sold X-warranty to willing buyers
  7. Best way to fight cancer: allow people to live oil-free.

Line of Rav4 in the merry-go-round area -- just like the run-a-round EV drivers and the public received from the Oilies!06/05/200316:05

These are most of the remaining EV1, the rest have been confiscated by GM.06/05/200316:05

Trying to get the point across -- but what will the editors leave in the 2 minute spot?06/05/200316:07

Why the passion, they asked. It's perhaps that no one can understand the hostility of General Motors to willing customers. What is at stake, that they are so harsh? This is not "free enterprise", it's really WARLORD CAPITALISM.06/05/200316:09 Can we look at it from a civil rights angle? 06/06/20038:45

But who will listen, and save the EV1?06/05/200316:10

I love the idea of electric cars...the quickest way to impact climate and use less gas though is to RIDE YOUR BIKE, Lobby for a comprehensive transportation plan that includes walking, biking, pub trans, AND finally insist on EV's. The advantage of the "human powered" ZEV that is the bike, is that you are also taking care of your body at the same time. I'm also a huge fan of the EV for longer trips. The Think program would have been HUGE if it had actually gotten going. The customer service rep at Ford that told me about the cancellation of the program, was audibley upset...he said "man it's a great car, it's really too bad it was cancelled, I've had thousands of requests for this car." 06/12/200313:40
Great page. Keep up the gatherings and continue media coverage. Jan Vandersloot06/11/200322:28
Can someone please tell me where all the EV-1's are going? If GM is taking them back from there expired leases... what will they do with them? Are these cars holding a secret golden egg? Why does the media not pick up on these cars that will be crushed, or parted out? Does GM want to put these cars to rest before the public finds out how much replacement batteries will run? I still want one! Thor Poulsen, Hayward CA.06/11/200319:18
I read on your site that conversions are capable of 70mph and a 100 to 150 mile range, I'll buy it. Why is it so hard for a new company to manuafacture such a car and sell it? If the big Auto makers won't do it why not a new company? Why can't you develope a mailing list of interested individuals, we each buy stock and someone like Deloren makes it happen? If gas is twice as expensive in Europe, and the driving distances are less, why isn't a European manufacturer making an ev and making a killing? We should vote out of office any politician that doesn't see beyond the tip of their own re-election and assist in creating the tax and grant incentives to make ev's available NOW! Marion Zaugg, Mansfield, Ohio06/11/20035:25
What's wrong with hybrids is that they are STILL A GASOLINE CAR. Why buy a complicated piece of electronic marvel that gets 50 or so miles per gallon, when a regular economy car will do the same? It's just a dodge, to divert attention away from real EVs, that DO pose a challenge to the oil magnates.06/09/200317:21

What is wrong with Hybrid? After test-driving more than 150 new cars and trucks, the Detroit News has honored the 2003 gasoline-electric Honda Civic Hybrid as its Car of the Year. "The Civic Hybrid... may be seen years from now as a critical first step in the industry's slow move away from traditional internal combustion engines. Products like the $20,000 Civic Hybrid hold out hope that we may wean ourselves away from dependence on foreign oil and drive cleaner, more environmentally friendly products. The gasoline-electric sedan is an impressive step in what's shaping up as the automotive revolution of the 21st century." 06/06/20039:59
Wish I could have been there! Patty06/06/20039:48
Keep the clean dream alive....06/06/20038:53
Let's hear it for electric cars. I hope someday someone develops one that will really take hold of the general public. We can't keep on destroying earth with all this polution. Keep the dream alive.....06/06/20038:53
Perhaps a little civil disobdiance is in order? Rosa Parks didn't give up her seat. Don't give up yours! Now, she's a household name, and the Ford bus is in a museum. The car company celebrates her historic act of defiance, and they probably charge admission fees too. http://www.hfmgv.org/exhibits/rosaparks/default.asp06/06/20038:51
Thanks for the action! I'll be contacting World news Tonight to encourage them to explore the EV issue. Also, thanks to the 1400+ signers of the EV1 petition at Care2.com. -EV prospective buyer in Orlando.06/06/20037:21
Keep up the good work. The oilies are holding us hostage up here in Ottawa, Canada too.06/06/20035:44
Your page is fantastic.I'm with you against evil oil interests that desperately don't want let the clean cars live.Unfortunately I live in Portugal, very faraway from L.A., but we have here the same problems:company dealers don't want to sell EV...and I don't want to be a oil-dependent, when we have so many kind of regeneration energies all over the world. I'm looking for one of the few remaining GM EV1 cars to sell. That is exactly the kind of car that I had always dreamed about: a really sport coupé future car. Quick, beautiful and reliable, as well as ecological/economic. I Know that the plot against the EV continues, as phony reason for confiscation continue, but I think that good sense will win, and I hope that GM will not stop selling a vehicle that is dreamed by thousands of persons like me, all over around, and that car can be a really best seller. We are in the XXI century! Why should we stnd with the old cars tehcnologies. It's time to change for EV. I'd like to buy and import to Portugal(Algarve) my GM EV1.If you can help me, my address is: António José Brito Casa da Encosta - ALDEIA 8000 - 702 SANTA BÁRBARA DE NEXE ALGARVE PORTUGAL06/06/20031:40
Extremely good page. Keep up with the good work. Greetings from Iceland Benony Jonsson06/06/20030:06
GREAT that you are doing this! I WANT TO GET RID OF MY EXPLORER AND GET A RAV4 EV. HELP! The Toyota dealers won't help me and their web site won't let me go to it and leads me in circles like a hamster on a wheel. I can't imagine anyone wanting to sell their RAV4EV but let me know if you hear of anyone or have any ideas, OK? Thanks, -Brad Stanfield, Rav4 EV fan and wannabe owner.
